Yep,

That's pretty much my exact list too. Just the survival stuff for a day...plus things like my journal, camera, water, etc.

I do the same thing, anything valuable, gifts, journal, MP3, etc I put into daybag for flights. You never know when it might be
the lucky day your rucksack gets left on the tarmac!

I've been traveling for 3 months now with my ospery kestrel 38.  It's held up very well and the 38 liters has been more than enough.  I have room for extra crap I pick up, which I can later ship home if I choose to.

Hey Vince,
38L is a good compact size, congrats on the good packing job!

Where are you traveling?  I have made due with my 40L Gregory in warm places but anyplace that requires long pants and
proper shoes kills me on space and I end up carrying my 55L.

Ok, I went to REI today to check out packs, and the only 40L ones I could find all had this Mesh back that was begging to be torn to pieces...

I'm going to take to looking for one online and buying it there. The guys at REI looked at me like I was a bit off my bar stool when I told them I was going backpacking for a year, guess we arn't so popular, I figured a place like REI would be used to people like us...hmm.

Being an outdoors oriented store, they might have thought you were going hiking and camping for a year rather than travel!

It messes me up on Google rankings, etc all the time.  In America "backpacking" usually refers to the great outdoors while
in most other countries the word "backpacking" refers to budget travel.

Vhan,

My experience at REI is mixed.  Some people there are super friendly and helpful.  Some totally understand backpacking.  Others are just jerks.  Overall though, who cares what they say, that's why you have this forum.

Greg,

I've been backpacking East Asia and South East Asia.  you can check out my blog at http://vagabondvince.blogspot.com to see where i've been.  i'm way behind on my blog though.  i'll eventually get around to my gear and my packing.

i have 2 pants.... 1 too many actually since i'm in SE Asia, but they fit well.  They're made by columbia and mountain hardware.  i have only a super thin jacket... more for typhoons than anything else.  i have 2 wool shirts, 5 wool socks, 3 travel undies, and swimming trunks i use as shorts.  they dry fast and i can go commando to save on the washing (tmi ... i know).

If anyone is looking for a good deal ($50 US) on a 50(ish) litre backpack, this might be worth a look...

http://www.rei.com/outlet/product/768907

The link was posted on bootsnall the other day and I thought it might be helpful for someone looking for a cheap pack.

Thanks apple, but I'm pretty set on getting an osprey kestrel. One because it was reccomended here, and it was the only non-mesh back one I could find at the REI down here! Smiley

I've officially "downsized" my backpack and am the proud new owner of a 48 litre top-loading (with side zipper) pack.

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524442418947&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302700149&bmUID=1233534846023

I don't think I'm going to mind the top-loading bit as the bag isn't that big to begin with. Items that fall to the bottom are no less accessible than in the bottom of my old panel loader.

The big difference is comfort and this pack fits really well and has a nice streamlined profile. Now, I just have to pare down the packing list a little more to leave some room for the inevitable bits and bobs one accumulates on the road.

Beautiful!  Congratulations on your new home.  I don't think people realize how exciting it is to get a new backpack....that thing is going to be your
home, storage, best friend, and only source of comfort for months.....I think I'm going to be buried with mine one day. Smiley

Can't wait to see your super-light packing list.  I miss those days...now by time I carry SLR camera, lenses, laptop, etc I look like I just got off
the cruise ship....might as well wear a Bermuda shirt to finish the package.

Excellent choice!

Thank you! It's my new "baby"...I stuffed it full of clothes and have it propped up next to my desk in order to get used(visually at least) to the smaller size.

The fit is great and all the weight rests on my hips and I hardly feel anything on my shoulders.

I'll have to put some serious thought into what I bring on the next adventure. Adding a laptop and all related laptop accessories to my gear is going to add quite a bit of weight.  My 20 litre daybag will end up being full of electronics, leaving little room for much else.

I can imagine adding an SLR camera and all the related bits and bobs would take up a lot of room!

Cutting down on clothes won't be an issue, but toiletries will....I think that extra bottle of conditioner will have to stay home next time. Still debating on the down-filled sleeping bag bit. Despite traveling mostly in warm climates, it's "saved" me a few times when I became very ill (feverish) on the road, it only takes up 8 litres, but 8 litres is a lot when you only have a 48 litre bag.
