Perhaps I'm being a bit too obvious here, but a decent, worn-in, comfortable pair of shoes. You're going to be spending quite a bit of time in them, so they better be good. I know that of all the travel gear I've looked at, the shoes and the bag are the two items that I would seriously consider spending real money on, they're by far the two most important things to worry about.

Definitely....I learned in the army that your feet are one of your most important assets...the smallest injury (like a blister gone bad) can knock you out of commission and get you into trouble.

3 x 3 in of tinfoil....hmmmm....do you and MacGuyver know something that we don't?   Grin

Your vagabond spirit. Patience. Love. Smile. (Ok, I know that these are not exactly "gear", but I think one can get "gear" anywhere ... but if you insist on gear, I say ... pen and paper, so you can record your experiences and share it with the rest of the world).

Camera! It isn't the most important, but goes hand in hand with Alex's comment
