I would like to start this post, with a tip I learned from the National Geographic photography site. Greg's question about macro lenses helped me remember it.
ok so you want to take a picture of something small and you don't have a macro lens. No worries! Take off the lens you have mounted on your camera. Now invert the lens and cover the hole of the camera with the filter side. Set your camera to manual and set the lens to 50 mm or close to that. Now it's time to get close to the subject you want to take a picture from. You have to focus moving back and forth until you get the sweet spot. You can really close  with this  technique  and it only needs a bit of practice to get a decent picture.

That sounds like a major hack, but hey - I'll try it! 

Beats buying (and carrying) more lenses. Smiley
