two nights in Rome

we are 2 couples travelling together and will be spending 2 nights in Rome
mid May 2010. We are looking for a hotel that is not too expensive and centrally situated near the Spanish Steps. We were advised to stay in this area as it is trendy with walking streets and a great Italian vibe.. Any suggestions? We would love to hear from anyone who has been there and can confirm if this is good advice to get the flavor of the city. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Why not try private accommodation in Rome? It is cheaper and let you feel true italian spirit.
