Just a heads up that About.com is hiring some writers for travel-related topics:
http://tinyurl.com/yk95qqlAmong other juicy subjects, they are looking for a "backpacking" writer and a "hostels" writer to write about life in hostels, working in hostels, etc. There are also openings for U.S. cities, ethnic food, and other fun topics for struggling travel writers.
It's minimum $500 a month toward your travel, plus some connections with the NY Times. I'm the current contributing writer for Southeast Asia...the work can be time consuming, but rewarding. This is definitely a way to start building a writing resume.
