I've met quite a few people here in Chiang Mai for the TEFL/ESL school which lasts about 5 weeks, its a good, inexpensive place to live with lots to do while you take your course.
I'm going to get in contact with the guys there and see if we can set something up for Startbackpacking.com members or at the very least get some contact goodies!
